Boerne

Founded in 1852 by German settlers and incorporated in 1909, the City of Boerne was one of the area's most strategic transportation locations on routes for those traveling into San Antonio or the Texas hill country by horse, wagon, train, and motorized vehicle.

Located slightly less than 45 miles southeast of Kerrville, and less than 25 minutes travel time from the suburban centers and amenities of San Antonio, the city has become a major tourist destination. The city's popularity is based on the establishment of many quaint shops offering antique and eclectic shopping in the historic downtown section.

Historic Past

Boerne mixes its historic past and small-town ambiance with new city folk who are seeking an area where natural beauty abounds and where the quality of life and open-space environments are valued. With the expansion of Interstate 10, Boerne became even more accessible to tourists and metroplex residents and growth began to find the area. Once called the key to the hills, Boerne is situated on the east side of Interstate 10 about 22 miles northwest of San Antonio.

The downtown area has a number of small businesses, quaint shops, and period buildings / neighborhoods, which reflect the city's proud legacies. Part of the legacy also includes the historic Plaza where the community still congregates for concerts, festivals, and commerce. The community has a strong focus on providing high-quality services to both long-term and new residents alike. An emphasis exists regarding the upgrade of senior and youth services / programs. The city has six parks with organized sports and recreational opportunities in abundance. High school and youth sports draw large, enthusiastic, and friendly crowds.

Fair Oaks Ranch

Once a Ranch

The City of Fair Oaks Ranch evolved from several parcels of land acquired by oil man Ralph Fair, Sr. during the 1930s. The working ranch, which had a dairy and granary, was first a center for Mr. Fairʼs racehorse operation. Later, Mr. Fair established a registered Hereford cattle operation including a cutting-edge artificial insemination program.

Through The Years

The ranch developed its own Hereford bloodline from a bull named Battle Intense and today the renowned bovine is given tribute at an annual golf tournament bearing his name. After the death of Mr. and Mrs. Fair, the family decided to develop a portion of the ranch as a residential community in 1975. In 1978 the 14,000 sq. ft. Fair home became a country club and to this day remains a focal point for social activity on The Ranch.

In 1985 the very active Fair Oaks Ranch Homeowners Association (FORHA) considered incorporation as a Class A General Law municipality. Under the leadership of founding fathers: Boots Gaubatz, Bob Herring, and Don King, a complicated process ensued.

City's Beginnings

Since Fair Oaks Ranch had been established in Bexar, Kendall, and Comal counties, numerous legal proceedings and several elections were required.

Ultimately, the City incorporated on January 21, 1988. Today the original 5,000 acres are blending well with the newly acquired ETJ from San Antonio. The City strives to preserve the beauty of the area, its quality of life, and the unique history surrounding the land. It is a legacy well worth preserving! 20th Anniversary Video.

San Antonio

San Antonio, is the seventh most populous city in the United States of America and the second most populous city in the state of Texas, with a population of 1,409,019.[1] It was the fastest growing of the top 10 largest cities in the United States from 2000 to 2010, and the second from 1990 to 2000.[4][5] The city is located in the American Southwest, the south–central part of Texas, and the southwestern corner of an urban region known as the Texas Triangle.

San Antonio serves as the seat of Bexar County. The city has characteristics of other western urban centers in which there are sparsely populated areas and a low density rate outside of the city limits. San Antonio is the center of the San Antonio–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. Commonly referred to as Greater San Antonio, the metropolitan area has a population of over 2.27 million based on the 2013 U.S. Census estimate, making it the 25th-largest metropolitan area in the United States and third-largest in the state of Texas. Growth along the Interstate 35 and Interstate 10 corridors to the north, west and east make it likely that the metropolitan area will continue to expand.

San Antonio was named for Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is on June 13, by a 1691 Spanish expedition in the area. It is notable forSpanish colonial missions, the Alamo, the River Walk, the Tower of the Americas, the Alamo Bowl, and Marriage Island. Commercial entertainment includes SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme parks, and the city is visited by approximately 26 million tourists per year, according to the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau. The city is home to the five-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs and hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, one of the largest such events in the country.

The US armed forces have numerous facilities here: Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base (which constitute Joint Base San Antonio), and Lackland AFB/Kelly Field Annex, with Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley located outside the city. Kelly Air Force Baseoperated out of San Antonio until 2001, when the airfield was transferred to Lackland AFB. The remaining portions of the base were developed as Port San Antonio, an industrial/business park. San Antonio is home to six Fortune 500 companies and the South Texas Medical Center, the only medical research and care provider in the South Texas region.

Bulverde/Spring Branch

This “hub” location is not without history: the founding of Fredericksburg in 1846 necessitated a road to connect it with New Braunfels, founded in 1843. This road took a route that bypassed the more difficult paths to the North and went through what is now downtown Bulverde, popularly called "The Village" which is located on Bulverde Road just West of 281 (1863/Bulverde exit off 281).

Bulverde was founded in 1850 as a stopping point for travelers and called the Pieper Settlement. The present day name was taken from the local post office which was founded in 1880 and named for Luciano Bulverdo, an early land owner. The population was one hundred in 1940. In 1947 the Herrera, Ufnau, Honey Creek. Mustang Hill and Green Hill School Districts were consolidated into the Bulverde School District and had an enrollment of fifty two. Popular today for the local spirit born from those early pioneer beginnings and quaint, historical sites, the area has continued to attract more and more people and businesses looking to escape the compact, hustle-bustle of the city. Most residents prefer to shop and find entertainment in their community surrounded by the quiet gentleness that only the Bulverde/Spring Branch area can offer.

Bulverde/Spring Branch is also home to an excellent public schooling system, the Comal Independent School District. Check out www.greatschools.org for more information.
